Mary Alice O’Dowd, M.D. ’59, daughter of James & Beatrice O’Dowd, English teachers at LHS, whose enthusiasm for literature inspired her own love of reading, graduated with a degree in history from Trinity College in Washington, D.C., and a Master’s Degree in Russian History from Georgetown and had a brief career teaching in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades.
Mary Alice graduated from New York Medical College and after Consultation Liaison Psychiatry Fellowship at Montefiore Medical Center; she remained and is currently the Director of the Psychosomatic Medicine Service and Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. O’Dowd researched and produced some of the earliest studies on the cognitive impact of HIV. While she remains an AIDS educator, she also studies Factitious Disorder, insomnia and obesity. She has taught at the college and medical school level. In fact, the only level she hasn’t taught at is high school and she is open to the possibility in the future.
